BAAI Applauds The White House's Genesis Mission

We applaud the White House’s signing of the Genesis Mission Executive Order. This is a decisive signal that the United States is elevating AI-enabled science and innovation to a national imperative. As the text declares, “In this pivotal moment, the challenges we face require a historic national effort, comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project.”

That comparison is not rhetorical but underscores the high stakes. Just as the original Manhattan Project marshaled the nation’s brightest minds and critical assets, the Genesis Mission commits to harnessing our federal government’s scientific and technological capabilities to use AI for scientific discovery. As Michael Kratsios, the President’s Science and Tech Advisor, explained, this project “will shorten discovery timelines from years to days or even hours, empowering scientists to test bolder hypotheses and discover breakthroughs currently unreachable."

To illustrate this, Kratsios explained that for the past 30 years, the US’s science advantage has faced a number of headwinds. He highlighted how “new drug approvals have flatlined or declined (as) more researchers are needed to achieve the same output, and workforce training has stagnated.” However, Kratsios predicted that this EO will help the US “overcome these challenges by unifying agency scientific efforts and integrating AI as a scientific tool to revolutionize the way science and research are conducted.” In practice, this will mean new medical breakthroughs and improved healthcare. But the promise is not just limited to science but is about ensuring the US stays economically competitive as AI revolutionizes every major industry.

The White House rightfully recognizes that AI is not just another tech trend but is an unprecedented engine accelerating new advances in manufacturing, biotech, energy systems, and quantum science. By aligning our nation’s resources, such as national labs, federal datasets alongside university research and private-sector AI muscle, the order lays the infrastructure for breakthroughs that will redefine the US’s global leadership.

For the Genesis Mission to fully deliver, Congress must now finish the job. American entrepreneurs cannot unleash AI-driven innovation while navigating a maze of inconsistent state rules that create barriers for builders and uncertainty for research. A clear national framework is essential to unlock the full benefits of this initiative.

If we get this right, AI will not merely accelerate American science, sparking a new era of prosperity in which discovery becomes our greatest competitive advantage.
